Advice for graduate applicants
Applicants are encouraged to state as specifically as possible which subject or subjects they intend to pursue at Oxford. D.Phil applicants should include, in their Research Proposal, information about their background in Linguistics and degree of preparation already achieved for the research, as well as an outline of the thesis and of how the research will be conducted. M. Phil and M. St. applicants in their Statement of Purpose should be as specific as possible about their background in Linguistics and study aims. Admission comprises acceptance both by the University and by one of the Colleges / Halls; you will be asked to state your College preferences, if any, when you apply. Most colleges and halls are glad to consider applications for Linguistics and Philology, but certain colleges have indicated that they cannot do so: check before you make your choice. Many colleges restrict the number of places they will offer for one-year postgraduate courses.
Funding
You must indicate your intention to apply for certain funding opportunities (in particular, AHRC funding for UK and EU students, and Clarendon funding for all students) by ticking the appropriate box on the admissions form, and providing all required additional material. Conditions
If you are offered a place, you will be told which academic and financial conditions you must fulfil.
Academic conditions: You must provide proof of the results of the degrees on which your application is based, and these must be available to the Faculty by mid-September. If in doubt, please check with your current university to ensure that your results will be available by that time.
Financial conditions: Every student must demonstrate the ability to fund the studies envisaged, and the college requires proof of your ability.
Once the conditions are fulfilled, you will be sent a letter confirming this, with a University Contract. You must sign the contract and return it to the Examination Schools in High Street.
Visas
Please note that the regulations concerning visas have changed this year, and that the letter necessary for requesting a visa will only be issued after all the entry conditions are fulfilled. Therefore, if you need a visa, it is advisable to complete the conditions as early as possible, preferably in July, to avoid delay in the visa application process.
Status on arrival
Graduate students arriving for study in the M.St. and M.Phil. programmes are admitted directly to the status of M. St.or M.Phil. student: there is no probationary period. Students proceeding from the Oxford M.Phil. may be admitted directly to D.Phil. status. All others intending to read for a D.Phil. can only be admitted initially to Probationer Research Student status. Probationer Research Students normally seek admission to D.Phil. status in their third term. Students who have not previously taken a taught-course Master's degree or equivalent are not normally admitted to Probationer Research Student status, but are advised to start by taking the M.Phil.
Applied Linguistics/Second Language Acquisition
Applicants whose interest is Applied Linguistics should note that the Department of Education offers an M.Sc. in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition (see http://www.education.ox.ac.uk/courses/msc-applied-linguistics/). The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics does not work in this field.
Proficiency in English
A good command of English is essential for success in all these degrees. If English is not your native language, you are required to achieve the higher overall score, with any additional requirements, specified at http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/internat_students.html. If you are currently following another programme conducted in English, or have done so in the recent past, we may exempt you from this requirement, but we reserve the right nevertheless to insist upon it. Please supply your test result with your application if possible. If your application is otherwise successful, you may be admitted conditionally upon your attaining the necessary result before the start of your programme here.
Deadlines
Applications for admission are considered in batches after each deadline, provided that the accompanying documentation (references, samples of written work, transcripts) is complete.
Residence
MPhil and DPhil students can expect to be in Oxford for most of the year, including long periods of vacation. Candidates should take this into account when planning their expenses budget.
