The tradition of linguistics that I work in seeks to properly characterize knowledge of language. Language is viewed as a complex mental capacity that can be profitably studied as a formal system. Given the complexity of language, a promising approach is to break the overall system down into smaller sub-systems and to study properties of these systems and interactions between systems.
