Centre for Linguistics & Philology
The University facility for teaching and research in linguistic subjects is the Centre for Linguistics and Philology, which occupies part of the former Clarendon Press Institute on Walton Street. The building is on the east side of the street, between numbers 151A and 150, about halfway between Worcester College and Little Clarendon Street (see map on the contact page for details). The Centre maintains offices for teaching and research staff and administration staff. Facilities for graduate students include a common room, individual lockers, computer workstations and printers and photocopiers. Most graduate courses in linguistics and philology are held in the building, which as a whole is shared with the Institute for Chinese Studies.
Language & Brain Lab
The Language and Brain Laboratory was established in 2008 as part of the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. It is an active research laboratory covering all aspects of linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Research members in this laboratory are engaged in theoretical as well as experimental research covering psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic methodology. For more information please visit the Language & Brain Lab website.
Libraries
Oxford has exceptionally good library facilities. For Linguistics and Philology you will need to register with the Bodleian Library (which houses the main collections) and the Taylor Institution Library (or ‘Taylorian’). Some of the main linguistics periodicals are kept on open shelves in the Upper Reading Room in the Old Bodleian; others must be called from the stacks. Recently acquired books in linguistics are displayed in the Radcliffe Camera (part of the Bodleian). The Taylorian, unlike the Bodleian, is a lending library. It maintains a linguistics reading room and a good selection of linguistics and philology periodicals. Linguistics books may also be borrowed from the Modern Languages Faculty Library, the English Faculty Library, the Oriental Institute Library, and the Philosophy Library in Merton Street. For Philology you will also find valuable material in the Sackler Library (Classical and Near-Eastern languages; some Indo-European).

Computing
The Centre for Linguistics and Philology maintains workstations with internet connections, a variety of software including word-processors and printers, to be shared amongst the students. You may register for the University network at the Oxford University IT Services, 9 — 13 Banbury Road. More information about IT Services can be found at: http://oucs.ox.ac.uk
Facilities for computing in the arts at Oxford are particularly good. The Oxford Text Archive and other databases can be accessed via the Computing Service or through workstations in colleges and many university buildings. Word processors are available for student use in many colleges. Many facilities of the Computing Services are described in the Graduate Studies Prospectus. More information about the Oxford Text Archive can be found at: http://ota.ahds.ac.uk/

The Language Centre
The University Language Centre on 12 Woodstock Road offers direct instruction and language laboratory facilities in a vast number of languages. You may register at any time for self-instruction. Taught courses in the major modern languages start at the beginning of each term. For some of these there is considerable demand, and you should register as early as possible to be sure of admission.
