After undergraduate studies in classics and graduate studies in linguistics in Oxford, Richard was an assistant editor and subsequently editor of the Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources (2008-14), seeing it through to the end of its century-long gestation. During and since that time he has been a linguistics tutor for a number of colleges and also, since 2014, lecturer in classical languages at University College. He continues to be interested in the long history of the Latin language from its earliest time down to the present day, including its non-native use in medieval Britain and its interaction with the other languages of Britain in the period. He is a member of the advisory board for the Anglo-Norman Dictionary project.
