The Faculty is proud to announce that Professor Andreas Willi’s book Origins of the Greek Verb (Cambridge University Press 2018) is one of the winners of this year’s Goodwin Award of Merit of the Society for Classical Studies. To quote the citation which can be read in full at <https://classicalstudies.org/scs-news/2021-goodwin-awards-merit>, the book is “a bountiful storehouse of information on the proto-history and history of the Greek verb, a re-examination of some of the longest held views about the place of the Greek verb in the story of Proto-Indo-European . . . an explicit call to debate and further research . . . a paradigm of detailed, technical philology . . . an enlightening history of linguistic scholarship . . . a demonstration of how and why historical linguistics should matter to students of ancient literatures . . . a challenge to comfortably received opinion and a genuine step forward in the field”. Many congratulations, Andreas!
