BA Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications Open
The Faculty invites expressions of interest from postdoctoral and completing graduate scholars who wish to apply for the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme for entry in 2024 through Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics. The deadline is 31 July.
As we are only able to support a limited number of applicants, we will run an internal selection process in August to select our candidates. Below are details of this EOI process.
The Fellowships are designed to enable outstanding, recent postdoctoral scholars in the Humanities or Social Sciences to obtain experience of research and teaching in a university environment for a period of three years, to strengthen their research and teaching track record and to improve their prospects of obtaining permanent posts by the end of the fellowship. More information about the scheme is available on the British Academy website (which will be updated with the 2023 call details from 5 July). There are strict eligibility requirements and potential candidates are advised to check these carefully.
Eligibility
You cannot reapply to this scheme unless invited to do so by the BA.
British citizens and any nationals from the EEA are eligible, regardless of where their doctorate was obtained. Anyone of any nationality who has a doctorate from a UK university is eligible. If an applicant does not meet the prior categories, they may be accepted if they can demonstrate ‘strong prior association’ with the UK academic community (this usually means holding a post here).
Applicants must be of Early Career Status, meaning they must apply within three years from the date of their successful viva voce examination. For this round of competition, applicants are expected to have completed their viva voce between 1 April 2021 and 1 April 2024. Exemption from this criterion may be granted for reasons occurring after the date of the viva voce examination such as: maternity leave, illness, family commitments etc. Applicants wishing to apply for exemptions should email posts@thebritishacademy.ac.uk. Confirmation of exemption from the BA should be submitted with the EOI.
EOI Process
Candidates who intend to apply for a BA Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Faculty are asked to submit a completed application form which you can download here to research.support@humanities.ox.ac.uk no later than 31 July 2023. They should also ask their proposed mentor to send a brief note of support to the same address by the same date.
Please note that all applicants should have secured the agreement of a potential mentor within the Faculty, but mentors are not expected to provide any input into applications ahead of this EOI stage. Mentors will be expected to provide advice and input for the applicants the Faculty puts forward to the BA.
Applicants are also welcome to include, if appropriate, a separate statement of any circumstances that they feel may have impacted on their research track record (such as illness, parental leave, etc).
There is no guarantee that applications which arrive after the above date will be supported or processed. Candidates selected by the Faculty will be contacted by the Division’s Research Facilitation team with further information on the process and timetable for submitting your application via the British Academy application system. An online webinar for candidates selected by Faculties will be held on Wednesday 6 September 9.30-11.00.
