Building on a John Fell funded pilot, a Phonetics Laboratory research team (Jose Elias-Ulloa, Elinor Payne, Maida Percival and Ian Watson) have been awarded a large follow-up John Fell Fund grant to continue their research on the articulation and aerodynamics of complex speech sounds. Developing a pioneering multi-instrumental approach (combining cutting edge ultrasound techniques, airflow measurement, electroglottography for laryngeal activity, and lip movement analysis), they will explore the physical limits and organising principles of speech production, and revisit the role of phonetic complexity in explaining core aspects of typology and phonological markedness.

This collaboration lays the foundation for an exciting new research hub in the Phonetics Lab, bringing together multiple areas of expertise, capitalising on the lab's new premises in the Schwarzman, and creating knowledge exchange opportunities with partner Phonetics Labs in the UK and beyond.
