Deborah Cameron played a foundational role in establishing the Faculty of Linguistics, Phonetics, and Philology. From the Faculty’s inception, she taught sociolinguistics with a particular focus on discourse analysis and language and gender. A world-leader in both fields as well as being a gifted teacher and communicator, her undergraduate and post-graduate courses in LPP were always over-subscribed. Many former students remember studying with Debbie as being a turning point in their lives, one that often went on to shape their careers. She will be remembered as a generous mentor and for her unaffected style.

Tributes and obituaries have also appeared in numerous national publications: The Critic, The Times and The Guardian.
