There are several different courses at Oxford which allow you to study linguistics.

Undergraduate level

At the undergraduate level it must be studied alongside another subject, either a modern language (Modern Languages & Linguistics, a.k.a. MLL), or one of psychology or philosophy, as part of the PPL degree (Psychology, Philosophy & Linguistics).

Listen to our students at both undergraduate and graduate level share their experiences at our faculty!

Graduate level

At the graduate level, we have three different taught master’s degrees and a doctoral degree. At Master’s level, you can choose a one-year MSt programme or a two-year MPhil programme, while at doctoral level, we offer three-year DPhil programme. If you want to learn more about them, please follow the links below.

We have a lot of facilities and do very interesting and varied research.

Open Days

The University hosts three Open Days a year (two days back-to-back in the summer, and one in the autumn), where you can learn more about linguistics and meet academics from the Faculty. Since at Oxford linguistics is always studied alongside another subject, we have a presence at the open days for Modern Languages and for Experimental Psychology/PPL. Typically, Open Days take place on the Wednesday and Thursday of the last week of June and the Friday of the second week of September. See the University Open Days page here for the latest information.

UNIQ

Each year the Faculty participates in the University’s UNIQ summer school, where we run a totally free 3-day programme of linguistics sessions for state school students from the UK. You will learn about linguistics as well as about life as a student at Oxford, and about how the admissions process works so that you will feel more comfortable making a competitive application. More information about UNIQ and how to apply can be found here.
