I am a researcher interested in the syntax semantics interface, in the ways in which the specific grammars of natural languages provide the scaffolding for humans to creatively build complex meanings to interpret and communicate their thoughts about the world. My work is thus cross-disciplinary and involves a constant dialectic between the theoretical and the empirical. The topics I have most engaged with over my career and which I maintain an active interest in are:

  • the lexical semantics of verbs and argument structure
  • tense, aspect and modality
  • the relationship between conceptual content and it's relation to truth making.
  • perspectival and indexical content

I have worked on English, Scottish Gaelic, Bengali, Norwegian and am now beginning to tackle topics in non Indo-European languages as well, most recently Mandarin Chinese. I am also very interested in the semantic analysis of understudied languages.
