Biography

I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics (1 Jan. 2023-31 Jan. 2025). I obtained my PhD (2019) from the Linguistics and Applied Linguistics graduate research program at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, with the support of the Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and the Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS). I wrote a PhD thesis on metaphors of happiness in Indonesian from the perspectives of Cognitive Linguistics, Construction Grammar, and Quantitative Corpus Linguistics. My PhD thesis was supervised by Associate Prof. Alice Gaby, Dr Howard Manns, and Dr Simon Musgrave; it was examined by Prof. Martin Hilpert (University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland) and Dr Karen Sullivan (University of Queensland, Australia). The panel members during my PhD candidature were Prof. Emeritus John Newman, Prof. Réka Benczes, and Dr Anna Margetts.

I also lecture at the Bachelor of English Literature (BoEL), Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, in Bali, Indonesia (as an Assistant Professor [asisten ahli; cf. also here for the use of the Indonesian equivalence]). Since 2020, I have been the convener of the Corpus Linguistics course in the Linguistics Doctoral program, and since 2025, I am part of the teaching team for the Research Methods and Ethics course in the Linguistics Master's program, both in the same Faculty. I am the secretary of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on the Humanities and Social Sciences (CIRHSS) at Udayana University, where I lead a research group called CompLexico (Computer-assisted Lexicology and Lexicography). Since December 2023, I have been elected as a fellow or a member of the Indonesian Young Academy of Sciences (Akademi Ilmuwan Muda Indonesia [ALMI]).

I am interested in studying the lexicon, grammatical constructions, and cognitive semantics (i) from the perspectives of Cognitive Linguistics and usage-based Construction Grammar, and (ii) by applying quantitative, computational, and experimental methods. In my postdoctoral work (cf. below), I have grown an interest in Austronesian (historical-comparative) linguistics, linguistic typology, documentary lexicography, and language documentation. Beyond linguistics, I am interested in data sciencedigital humanities, and open science. I code mainly in R.

My postdoctoral work was part of an international team developing lexical resources for Enggano, a threatened language of Indonesia. This research was supported by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) (AH/W007290/1) (PI: Prof. Mary Dalrymple; Co-PI: Prof. I Wayan Arka), a "sibling" grant for another Enggano research (AH/S011064/1). One of the aims was to integrate Enggano's historical (paper-born, legacy) materials (e.g., word lists, texts, and a dictionary) and contemporary data into large portable (diachronic) lexical databases (e.g., EnoLEX, cf. also the links here); these can be used, among others, for in-depth historical research of Enggano and the neighbouring Austronesian languages. In addition, for the community, we (i) produced a printed Enggano-Indonesian-English dictionary, coordinated with the Enggano textbooks (for elementary and junior-high schoolers), and (ii) developed a web-based, mobile-compatible dictionary; the web dictionary is designed to represent a “collaborative lexicography” (Trap-Jensen 2013: 45), allowing community contribution to the dictionary content.

As the Enggano end-of-grant events, we organised a seminar and a workshop at the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University (9-10 January 2025) (news coverage here and here). It was then followed by delivering textbooks and the print dictionary to the Enggano island (14-17 January 2025) (news coverage here).

Research output and work-in-progress for Enggano have been available in various places: my webpage on the University of Oxford's Sustainable Digital Scholarship (SDS), the main Enggano SDS and its sub-groups, the @engganolang GitHub repository, Enggano Language registry on Zenodo, and the Databases section of the central Enggano webpage.

My other research outputs are available on my personal Figshare account and GitHub repository.
