Biography
I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. I obtained my PhD (2019) from the Linguistics and Applied Linguistics graduate research at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia with the support of the Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS). I wrote a PhD thesis on metaphors of happiness in Indonesian from the perspectives of Cognitive Linguistics, Construction Grammar, and Quantitative Corpus Linguistics. My PhD thesis was supervised by Associate Prof. Alice Gaby, Dr Howard Manns, and Dr Simon Musgrave; it was examined by Prof. Martin Hilpert (University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland) and Dr Karen Sullivan (University of Queensland, Australia). The panel members during my PhD candidature were Prof. Emeritus John Newman, Prof. Réka Benczes, and Dr Anna Margetts.
I also hold a lectureship at the Bachelor of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, in Bali, Indonesia. Since 2020, I am the convenor of the Corpus Linguistics course in the Linguistics Doctoral program at Udayana University.
My research interest is in the study of the lexicon, grammatical constructions, and cognitive semantics (i) from the perspectives of Cognitive Linguistics and usage-based Construction Grammar, and (ii) by applying quantitative, computational, and experimental methods. I am also interested in data science, digital humanities, and open science.
My postdoctoral work is part of an international team developing lexical resources for Enggano, a threatened language of Indonesia. This project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) (AH/W007290/1) (PI: Prof. Mary Dalrymple; Co-PI: Prof. I Wayan Arka). One of the aims is to integrate Enggano’s historical (paper-born) materials (e.g., wordlists, texts, and a dictionary) and contemporary data into large portable, lexical databases. These will be used, amongst others, for in-depth historical research of Enggano and the neighbouring Austronesian languages. From these resources, we will also develop a web-based, mobile-compatible Enggano-Indonesian-English learner’s dictionary for the community; the dictionary is envisioned to be in line with the spirit of “collaborative lexicography” (Trap-Jensen 2013: 45), allowing community contribution to the dictionary’s lexicographic content (e.g., usage data or culturally important pictures for an entry, inter alia). Research output (e.g., presentation, paper, and work-in-progress) will be posted on my University of Oxford figshare profile, the @engganolang GitHub repository, and the central Enggano webpage.
