The University of Oxford proposes to appoint an Associate Professor in Semantics, based in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, at the Clarendon Institute, Walton Street, Oxford, OX1 2HG, to hold office from 1 July 2020. The post will be held in conjunction with a Tutorial Fellowship at Jesus College and a Lectureship at Brasenose College, Oxford.
The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics welcomes interest from suitably qualified applicants in this year’s British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme, for awards to be taken up in September or October 2020. The scheme is designed to “offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their experience of research and teaching in a university environment which will develop their curriculum vitae and improve their prospects of obtaining permanent lecturing posts by the end of the Fellowship.”
Professor Janet Pierrehumbert elected to the National Academy of Sciences of the USA
The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics warmly congratulates Professor Janet Pierrehumbert on her election to the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. Being elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences is one of the highest honours a scientist can receive in recognition of their achievements in original research.
Congratulations to Professor Andreas Willi who has been awarded the Humboldt-Forschungs prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It is one of the most prestigious prizes in Germany and worth €60,000.
The prize is in recognition for his outstanding achievements in research and teaching: “herausragenden Leistungen in Forschung und Lehre”
Applications are invited for Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships from suitably qualified researchers wishing to base their work in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. The scheme is designed to support scholars at a relatively early stage of their careers, but with a proven record of research. Applicants must have submitted their doctoral thesis no more than four years before the closing date; so those who formally submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination before 28 February 2015 are not eligible unless they have since had a career break.
As in the previous year, the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 has ranked Oxford top in its subject table for Linguistics; also top-ranked are Philosophy and Psychology, which are joined up with Linguistics in our PPL degree.
The Faculty of Linguistics congratulates its Head of Administration and Finance, Dan Holloway, for having been shortlisted for this year’s Vice-Chancellor’s Diversity Awards, in the Individual Champion or Role Model category. By speaking openly about his experience of living with a mental health condition while studying and working at the University, he has been a powerful role model for others and increased awareness of mental health in many different contexts.
The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics is delighted to announce that Prof. Aditi Lahiri FBA won the award in the Inspiring Leadership category at this year’s Inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Innovation Awards, for the impressive way in which she has led her research team in developing a new Flexible Speech Recognition system (Flex-SR) that integrates linguistics research with cutting-edge technology. The award was presented to Prof. Lahiri at a ceremony on 12 July 2018.
Oxford’s Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics is looking to recruit a full-time Departmental Lecturer in Semantics from 1 October 2018 for a fixed-term period of 1 year.
